The papers congressional files of Bruce F. Vento primarily consist of committee and issue files, political and campaign materials, legislative profiles, voting records, form replies to constituent issue mail, schedules, news releases and newsletters, speeches, sound and video recordings, and foreign travel files. The collection is particularly strong in its documentation of energy, financial, environmental, and humanitarian issues, legislation, and policy in the 1980s and 1990s. The committee and issue files reflect Bruce Vento’s assignments to subcommittees concerned with housing, community development, financial institutions, consumer protection, national parks, forests, and public lands. There is substantial information on financial services regulation, the savings and loan crisis, foreign policy, human rights, the immigration and naturalization of Hmong veterans and refugees, homelessness, the Twin Cities Army Ammunition Plant, energy policy, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, and environmental issues in general. The political files relate mainly to his campaigns for Congress. An inventory is available in the repository and online.

The scrapbooks of Bruce Frank Vento contain mostly news clippings of articles, editorials, columns, campaign advertisements, and publicity items that appeared in the major St. Paul and Minneapolis daily newspapers, Ramsey County suburban newspapers, St. Paul neighborhood newspapers, and various organizational publications. There are also photocopies of transcripts of radio and television news programs, wire services news stories, and press releases. The clippings and other materials document Bruce Vento’s congressional activities, election campaigns, and other aspects of his political career; the social, economic, and political issues in which he was particularly interested. Subjects covered include foreign policy, economic and taxation policies, the environment (especially the preservation of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area), and health, education, and other human services, as well as his efforts in promoting federal policies that benefitted Minnesota and, especially, Ramsey County and St. Paul, and his relations with various constituents, including organized labor, ethnic and religious communities, and neighborhood, environmental, and women’s organizations.
