The papers of John Humphrey Small consist of primarily congressional correspondence, with some business and personal material. Correspondence concerns state and national Democratic politics, interests of constituents in northeastern North Carolina, major issues and events of the time, and local affairs of Beaufort County, N.C., in which John Humphrey Small was interested, particularly the public schools. John Humphrey Small’s main legislative interest was water transportation. He was active in promoting river and harbor legislation, particularly the east coast inland waterway. Also included are lecture notes while he was at Trinity College, Randolph County, N.C., in 1874; a brief diary, 1879; and directors’ and stockholders’ minutes and financial reports, 1888-1910 and 1917-1925, of Branning Manufacturing Company, Chowan County, N.C., which was engaged in lumbering and the manufacture of shingles and staves. John Humphrey Small’s papers form the bulk of the collection and concern his North Carolina agricultural interests, his legal practice, his activities in Congress, river and harbor improvements, the Intracoastal Waterway, patronage, Southern financial conditions, U.S. and North Carolina politics, World War I labor problems, and the 1929 depression.
