The papers of Congressman Lawrence Brooks Hays contains correspondence, diaries, notes, literary manuscripts, reports, speeches, clippings, political campaign materials, academic records, business and legal documents, photographs, sound recordings and other materials pertaining to his personal, familial, financial, professional, political, business, governmental, religious, educational, social, civic and other activities and interests; to Marion Prather Hays; and, specifically, to the Little Rock, Arkansas school integration crisis of 1957-1958. Addendum papers of Brooks Hays primarily containing memorabilia collected by him and his wife, Marion, documenting his career and numerous speaking engagements. Materials include a diary, letters and manuscript written by Hays, along with essays and letters written or collected by his son, Steele, his wife, Marion, or author Cyril E. Bryant, 1919-1984; awards and certificates presented to Hays, 1916-1982; scrapbooks and scrapbook materials which include printed articles both by and about Hays, political cartoons, and memorabilia, 1939-1991; photographs, motion pictures, and sound recordings, mostly of Hays speaking or attending various political, religious, and social functions, 1918-1982.

Typewritten transcript of original one page letter, dated April 15, 1935, and attached eight page typewritten memorandum from Brooks Hays to Paul Porter, executive assistant to the administrator of the U.S. Agricultural Adjustment Administration. Memorandum reports Hays’s findings on the social conditions and economic plight of share-croppers and tenant farmers in eastern Arkansas, especially as these reflect the impact of AAA policies implemented there. The collection consists of Brooks Hays’s personal Baptist related files during his tenure as a trustee of the Christian Life Commission (1955-1960) and his service as Vice-President and President of the Southern Baptist Convention. The collection includes correspondence, publications, news releases, biographical information, reports, subject files, minutes of SBC agencies, addresses made by Hays, photographs, and articles. Major subjects covered in the papers include church-state relations, ecumenicity, Baptist Jubilee Advance, trip to Moscow, peace issues, race relations, the dismissal of 13 professors at Southern Seminary and the Survey Committee to Study the Total Baptist Program. The papers also are available on microfilm.

Oral memoirs of Lawrence Brooks Hays. Transcript of oral history interviews conducted by A. Ronald Tonks with Brooks Hays over a three year period, 1975-1977. Hays talks about growing up in Arkansas, early memories of church life, college and law school days, his political career, his service in Congress, his tenure on the Christian Life Commission, his terms as president of the Southern Baptist Convention and his work with the Baptist World Alliance. Topics include: the Southern Baptist Convention, Baptist church life, Ku Klux Klan, Civil Rights movement, Democratic Party politics, and presidents of the United States from Franklin Roosevelt to John F. Kennedy. Duplication of any portion of the transcript is allowed only with the permission of the Director of the Southern Baptist Historical Library and Archives.
