Correspondence of Hiland Hall, chiefly relating to his political career and to his historical research.$bIncludes letters to Trenor W. Park and his wife, Laura (Hall) Park, daughter of Hiland Hall, James H. Trumbull, Isaac Jennings, Benson J. Lossing, and Justin S. Morrill. Letters to Hall include one from Carlos Coolidge. Early letters to Hall relate to his time as member of Congress, while later letters concern his historical work. Correspondents include Zadock Thompson, Jared Sparks, Larkin G. Mead, Jr., Ryland Fletcher, Henry B. Dawson, Erastus Fairbanks, Silas H. Jenison, Lorenzo Fassett, and Abby Maria Hemenway. Subjects include the Battle of Bennington, Peleg Sutherland, and the publication of Abby Hemenway’s Vermont Historical Gazetteer. Biographical and personal materials include a broadside from the Congressional election of 1832 and a tally of votes from the 1834 election as well as an early engraving of Hall. There is also a sketch of the Catamount Tavern by Hall’s granddaughter and notes on the life of Remember Baker. Also includes promissory note (1786) to Hiland Hall, presumably Hall’s great-grandfather. A finding aid is available in the repository.

The records are chiefly correspondence of Hiland Hall and his family and Civil War and business records of Henry T. Cushman. The Hall family correspondence is mostly letters to Hiland Hall from his wife, Dolly, two sons (Henry D. Hall and Nathaniel B. Hall), and Martha B. Hall, wife of Nathaniel B. Hall. There are two folders of letters (1838-1841) by Hiland Hall, in Washington, D.C., mostly to his wife Dolly and son Henry, when he was serving in the U.S. House of Representatives. Also included is family correspondence regarding the death and estate of Hiland Hall.
