The papers mainly consist of correspondence between Joseph Jonathan Davis and his wife, Katherine Elizabeth Davis while Joseph Davis was a captain in the Civil War and his subsequent imprisonment at Johnson’s Island. Also included is correspondence from their daughter, Katherine McAden Crenshaw while a student at St. Mary’s School in Raleigh, North Carolina. There are post-war letters from when Joseph Davis was attending the North Carolina General Assembly, campaigning for the 1870 elections, and campaigning for re-election to the U.S. Congress.
