A letter from Harry Rogers Pratt to University of Virginia President Colgate Whitehead Darden, Jr. describing his delivery of the vocal and piano score of Randall Thompson’s Testament of Freedomto Carr’s Hill and relating the background of its composition for the celebration of the 200th Anniversary of Thomas Jefferson’s birth. Pratt says about the piece, “Its composition and two performances make history and pull close together the political wisdom of Thomas Jefferson and the idealism of Franklin Roosevelt.” He also notes that Randall Thompson’s Testament of Freedomwas performed a few minutes before the funeral service for Roosevelt began in the Capitol. Topics discussed include Darden and Tuck’s personal backgrounds and political histories; Harry Byrd and his influence on the Democratic Party in Virginia and on state fiscal policies; prohibition and the role of Methodist Bishop James Cannon, Jr.; President Truman’s visit to the state and relationships with him; school desegregation and the state’s policy of “massive resistance” to it; Churchill’s 1946 visit to Virginia; and the state’s political future.

This history treats with the early years of Marine Corps aviation during WWI in which Darden participated. It also covers his service on the Naval Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives in the 1930s.
