A cabinet card photograph of William W. Bowers, who served as a first sergeant in Company I, 1st Wisconsin Cavalry Regiment during the Civil War and went on to become an influential politician in San Diego, California. The autographed photograph shows a bust view of an elderly Bowers wearing a civilian suit. Following his Civil War service Bowers moved to San Diego in 1869, was elected to the state assembly and senate, and was elected three times to the United States Congress (1891-1897).
