This extensive collection of Sherman Adams consists of official documents, speeches and speech notes, transcripts of radio and television broadcasts, copies of White House press releases, personal correspondence, private memoranda, records of telephone conversations, and hand-written notes by Mr. Adams on meetings and conversations with President Eisenhower, members of the Cabinet, and legislative leaders. Sixty-nine scrapbooks of newspaper clippings (1942-1958), appointment schedules (1953-1958), published works (including some items from limited editions), the several drafts of First-Hand Report (published in 1961), an excellent assortment of photographs from the Eisenhower years, and numerous personal awards, citations, and mementos can also be found in the holdings. The interview of Sherman Adams forms part of the Eisenhower Administration Project and covers Sherman Adams’s tenure as a presidential aide to President Eisenhower. Subjects covered include his duties as a White House Chief of Staff, as well as issues including desegregation, oil depletion allowance, and the vice-presidential nomination of 1956. The interview was conducted by Herbert S. Parmet.

The interview of Sherman Adams includes discussion of President Eisenhower’s decision to run for the Presidency; the 1952 Republican convention and campaign, the Richard Nixon fund, the Korea speech, Cabinet and White House staff; the National Security Council, Council of Economic Advisors, foreign policy; congressional-executive relations, economic controls. The interview was conducted by Ed Edwin.
