common schools and Bacon Academy, Colchester, Conn.; engaged in mercantile pursuits and in
manufacturing; mayor of Norwich, Conn. 1849-1850, 1856-1857; Governor of Connecticut
1858-1866; resumed his former business pursuits; elected as a Republican to the United States
Senate and served from March 4, 1869, until his death in Norwich, Conn., February 5, 1875;
chairman, Committee on Engrossed Bills (Forty-first and Forty-second Congresses), Committee on
Investigation and Retrenchment (Forty-second Congress), Committee on Indian Affairs (Forty-third
Congress); interment in Yantic Cemetery, Norwich, Conn.
