TAFT, Charles Phelps, (brother of President William Howard Taft, uncle of Robert Alphonso Taft and granduncle of Robert Taft, Jr.),
a Representative from Ohio; born in Cincinnati, Ohio, December 21,
1843; attended the common schools and was graduated from Phillips Academy,
Andover, Mass., in 1860, from Yale College in 1864, and from Columbia College
Law School of New York in 1866; was admitted to the bar in 1866; went to
Germany and was graduated from the University of Heidelberg in 1867; commenced
the practice of law in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1869; member of the State house of
representatives 1871-1873; became owner and editor of the Cincinnati Times-Star
in 1879; member of the board of sinking-fund trustees of the city of Cincinnati
for sixteen years and served as president 1898-1908; elected as a Republican to
the Fifty-fourth Congress (March 4, 1895-March 3, 1897); was not a candidate
for renomination in 1896 to the Fifty-fifth Congress; resumed the newspaper
business in Cincinnati; delegate to the Republican National Conventions in 1908
and 1912; died in Cincinnati, Ohio, December 31, 1929; interment in Spring
Grove Cemetery.
