SANDERS, Archie Dovell, a Representative from New York; born in Stafford, Genesee County,
N.Y., June 17, 1857; attended the common schools, Le Roy Academy and Buffalo
Central High School; in 1873 became a partner with his father in the produce
business at Stafford, N.Y.; elected highway commissioner of Stafford in 1894
and supervisor in 1895; member of the State assembly in 1895 and 1896; delegate
to many State conventions; delegate to the Republican National Convention in
1896 and 1924; appointed by President McKinley as collector of internal revenue
for the twenty-eighth district of New York in 1898 and served until 1913;
Republican State committeeman for the Thirtieth Congressional District in 1900
and 1901; member of the State senate in 1914 and 1915; elected as a Republican
to the Sixty-fifth and to the seven succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1917-March
3, 1933); chairman, Committee on the Post Office and Post Roads (Seventy-first
Congress); was not a candidate for renomination in 1932; returned to Stafford,
N.Y.; was serving as chairman of the Genesee County Republican Committee at the
time of his death in Rochester, N.Y., on July 15, 1941; interment in Stafford
Rural Cemetery, Stafford, N.Y.
