PATTERSON, James Willis, a Representative and a Senator from New Hampshire; born in Henniker, N.H., July 2, 1823; pursued classical studies; graduated from Dartmouth College, Hanover, N.H., in 1848; principal of the Woodstock Academy, Conn., for two years; attended the Theological Seminary at New Haven, Conn.; studied law; professor of mathematics, astronomy, and meteorology at Dartmouth College 1854-1865; member, State house of representatives in 1862; elected as a Republican to the Thirty-eighth and Thirty-ninth Congresses (March 4, 1863-March 3, 1867); elected to the United States Senate and served from March 4, 1867, to March 3, 1873; chairman, Committee on Enrolled Bills (Forty-first Congress), Committee on the District of Columbia (Forty-first and Forty-second Congresses); regent of the Smithsonian Institution; member, State house of representatives 1877-1878; State superintendent of public instruction 1881-1893; president of American Institute of Instruction; died in Hanover, N.H., on May 4, 1893; interment in Dartmouth Cemetery.
