OTEY, Peter Johnston, a Representative from Virginia; was born in Lynchburg, Campbell
County, Va., December 22, 1840; attended private schools in Lynchburg; was
graduated from the Virginia Military Institute at Lexington in 1859; engaged in
civil engineering; joined the Confederate Army in 1861 and served throughout
the Civil War; organized and built the Lynchburg & Durham Railroad and
became president of the company; engaged in banking and was general manager of
the Rivermont Land Co.; elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-fourth and to the
three succeeding Congresses and served from March 4, 1895, until his death;
delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1896; died in Lynchburg, Va.,
May 4, 1902; interment in the Presbyterian Cemetery.
