1998; member of the Massachusetts state house of representatives, 1995-1996;
member of the Massachusetts state senate, 1997-2001; elected as a Democrat to
the One Hundred Seventh Congress, by special election to fill the vacancy
caused by the death of United States Representative Joseph Moakley and
reelected to the six succeeding Congresses (October 16, 2001-present).
