LAWRENCE, Effingham, (cousin of Cornelius Van Wyck Lawrence), a Representative from Louisiana; born in Bayside, near Flushing, Long Island, N.Y., March 2, 1820; attended schools in Bayside and Flushing; moved to Louisiana about 1843; engaged in planting and the refining of sugar; member of the State house of representatives; successfully contested as a Democrat the election of Jacob Hale Sypher to the Forty-third Congress and took his seat on March 3, 1875, the last day of the session; resumed agricultural pursuits; died on Magnolia plantation, Plaquemines Parish, La., December 9, 1878; interment in Greenwood Cemetery, New Orleans, La.
