IRWIN, William Wallace, a Representative from Pennsylvania; born in Pittsburgh, Pa., in 1803; attended a private school in Pittsburgh and Allegheny College, Meadville, Pa.; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1828 and commenced practice in Pittsburgh; mayor of Pittsburgh in 1840; elected as a Whig to the Twenty-seventh Congress (March 4, 1841-March 3, 1843); was not a candidate for reelection in 1842; Chargé d’Affaires to Denmark from March 3, 1843, to June 12, 1847; died in Pittsburgh, Pa., September 15, 1856; interment in Allegheny Cemetery.
