HOFFMAN, Clare Eugene, a Representative from Michigan; born in Vicksburg, Union County,
Pa., September 10, 1875; attended the public schools and was graduated from the
law department of Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., in 1895; was
admitted to the Michigan bar in 1896 and commenced practice in Allegan, Mich.;
prosecuting attorney for Allegan County, Mich., 1904-1910; elected as a
Republican to the Seventy-fourth and to the thirteen succeeding Congresses
(January 3, 1935-January 3, 1963); chairman, Committee on Expenditures in the
Executive Departments (Eightieth Congress), Committee on Government Operations
(Eighty-third Congress); was not a candidate for renomination in 1962 to the
Eighty-eighth Congress; retired to his home in Allegan, Mich., where he died
November 3, 1967; interment in Oakwood Cemetery.
