Senate Years of Service: 1789-1797 Party: Pro-Administration; Federalist HENRY, John, a Delegate and a Senator from Maryland; born at Weston, on the Nanticoke River, near Vienna, Dorchester County, Md., in November 1750; attended West Nottingham Academy, Cecil County, Md., and graduated from the College of New Jersey (later Princeton University) in 1769; studied law at the Middle Temple in London; returned to the United States in 1775 and practiced law in Dorchester County, Md.; member, Maryland General Assembly; was a Member of the Continental Congress 1778-1780, 1785-1786; was a member of the committee to prepare the ordinance for the government of the Northwest Territory; elected as one of Marylands first two Members to the United States Senate in 1788; reelected in 1795 and served from March 4, 1789, until July 10, 1797; governor of Maryland 1797-1798; died at his country estate, Weston, Dorchester County, Md., December 16, 1798; interment in Christ Episcopal Church Cemetery, Cambridge, Md. |
