GWYNNE, John Williams, a Representative from Iowa; born in Victor, Iowa County, Iowa,
October 20, 1889; attended the public schools and was graduated from the law
department of the State University of Iowa at Iowa City, LL.B., 1914; was
admitted to the bar the same year and commenced practice in Waterloo, Black
Hawk County, Iowa; also engaged in agricultural pursuits; during the First
World War served as a second lieutenant in the Three Hundred and Thirteenth
Trench Mortar Battery, Eighty-eighth Division, United States Army, 1917-1919;
judge of the municipal court of Waterloo, Iowa, 1920-1926; county attorney of
Black Hawk County, Iowa, 1929-1934; elected as a Republican to the
Seventy-fourth and to the six succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1935-January 3,
1949); unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1948 to the Eighty-first
Congress; member of the Federal Trade Commission, 1953-1959, serving as
chairman 1955-1959; retired to Waterloo, Iowa, where he died July 5, 1972;
interment in Memorial Park Cemetery.
