BROWN, George Edward, Jr., a Representative from California; born in Holtville, Imperial County, Calif., March 6,
1920; graduated from Holtville Union High School, 1935; attended El Centro Junior College, 1938;
graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles, Calif., 1946; employed by the city of Los
Angleles, Calif., in personnel and engineering for twelve years between 1940 and 1957; management
consultant, 1957-1962; United States Army, 1944-1946; mayor and city councilman of Monterey
Park, Calif., 1954-1958; member of the California state assembly, 1959-1962; elected as a
Democrat to the Eighty-eighth and to the three succeeding Congresses (January 3, 1963-January 3,
1971); not a candidate for reelection, but was an unsuccessful candidate for nomination to the United
States Senate in 1970; elected to the Ninety-third and to the thirteen succeeding Congresses (January
3, 1973-July 15, 1999); chairman, Committee on Science, Space and Technology (One Hundred
Second and One Hundred Third Congresses); died on July 15, 1999, in Bethesda, Md.
