BROWN, Fred Herbert, a Senator from New Hampshire; born in Ossipee, Carroll County, N.H.,
April 12, 1879; attended the public schools and Dow Academy, Franconia, N.H.,
Dartmouth College, Hanover, N.H., and Boston University School of Law; admitted
to the bar in 1907 and commenced practice in Somersworth, N.H.; city solicitor
1910-1914; delegate to the State constitutional convention in 1912; mayor of
Somersworth, N.H. 1914-1922; United States attorney for the district of New
Hampshire 1914-1922; Governor of New Hampshire 1923-1924; member of the New
Hampshire Public Service Commission 1925-1933; elected as a Democrat to the
United States Senate and served from March 4, 1933, to January 3, 1939;
unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1938; appointed Comptroller General of
the United States by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in April 1939 and served
until his resignation on June 19, 1940; served as a member of the United States
Tariff Commission 1940-1941; retired from public and political activities; died
in Somersworth, N.H., February 3, 1955; interment in Ossipee Cemetery, Ossipee,
N.H.
