BOWDEN, Lemuel Jackson, (uncle of George Edwin Bowden),
a Senator from Virginia; born in Williamsburg, James City County,
Va., January 16, 1815; graduated from William and Mary College, Williamsburg,
Va.; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1838 and commenced practice in
Williamsburg; member, State house of delegates 1841-1846; delegate to the
Virginia constitutional conventions in 1849 and 1851; elected as a Republican
to the United States Senate and served from March 4, 1863, until his death in
Washington, D.C., on January 2, 1864; interment in Congressional Cemetery.
