BENNETT, John Bonifas, a Representative from Michigan; born in Garden, Delta County, Mich.,
January 10, 1904; attended the public schools; was graduated from Watersmeet
(Mich.) High School, from Marquette University Law School, Milwaukee, Wis., in
1925; took a postgraduate course at Chicago (Ill.) University Law School in
1926; was admitted to the Wisconsin bar in 1925 and to the Michigan bar in
1926; practiced law in Ontonagon, Mich., 1926-1942; prosecuting attorney of
Ontonagon County 1929-1934; deputy commissioner of the Michigan Department of
Labor and Industry 1935-1937; elected as a Republican to the Seventy-eighth
Congress (January 3, 1943-January 3, 1945); unsuccessful candidate for
reelection in 1944 to the Seventy-ninth Congress; resumed the practice of law;
elected in 1946 to the Eightieth and to the eight succeeding Congresses and
served from January 3, 1947, until his death in Chevy Chase, Md., August 9,
1964; interment in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Silver Spring, Md.
