BENNETT, Charles Goodwin, a Representative from New York; born in Brooklyn, N.Y., December 11,
1863; attended the public schools; was graduated from the Brooklyn High School
and from the New York Law School in 1882; was admitted to the bar in 1882 and
commenced practice in Brooklyn, N.Y.; unsuccessful candidate for election in
1892 to the Fifty-third Congress; elected as a Republican to the Fifty-fourth
and Fifty-fifth Congresses (March 4, 1895-March 3, 1899); unsuccessful
candidate for reelection in 1898 to the Fifty-sixth Congress; Secretary of the
United States Senate from January 29, 1900, to March 3, 1913, when a successor
was elected; returned to Brooklyn, N.Y., discontinued active business pursuits,
and lived in retirement until his death on May 25, 1914; interment in Evergreen
Cemetery.
