BARKER, Abraham Andrews, a Representative from Pennsylvania; born in Lovell, Oxford County, Maine, March 30, 1816; attended the common schools; engaged in agricultural pursuits and also in the shook business; moved to Carrolltown, Pa., in 1854 and to Ebensburg, Cambria County, Pa., where he continued the shook business; also engaged in the mercantile business in 1858 and later in the lumber business; delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1860; served in Company E, Fourth Regiment, Pennsylvania Emergency Troops, during the Civil War; elected as a Republican to the Thirty-ninth Congress (March 4, 1865-March 3, 1867); unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1866 and for election as a Republican in 1872 to the Forty-third Congress; reengaged in the lumber and shook business until 1880, when he retired from active pursuits; died in Altoona, Pa., while on a visit for medical treatment March 18, 1898; interment in Lloyd Cemetery, Ebensburg, Pa.
