lawyer, private practice; law clerk for United States district court judge for
the Southern District of Texas, 1971-1972; assistant district attorney, Harris
County, Tex., 1972-1976; private practice of law, 1976-1983; elected as a
Democrat to the Ninety-eighth and to the five succeeding Congresses (January 3,
1983-January 3, 1995); was not a candidate for reelection in 1994, but was an
unsuccessful candidate for nomination to the United States Senate.
