ALBERT, William Julian, a Representative from Maryland; born in Baltimore, Md., August 4,
1816; was graduated from Mount St. Marys College, near Emmittsburg, Md., in
1833; engaged in the hardware business until 1855 and, later, in banking; was a
prominent Union leader in Maryland and worked to prevent the secession of the
State; one of the founders and directors of the First National Bank of
Maryland; director of several insurance companies, savings banks, and
manufacturing companies; unsuccessful candidate for election in 1866 to the
Fortieth Congress and in 1868 to the Forty-first Congress; elected as a
Republican to the Forty-third Congress (March 4, 1873-March 3, 1875); was not a
candidate for reelection to the Forty-fourth Congress in 1874; resumed his
former business pursuits; died in Baltimore, Md., March 29, 1879; interment in
Greenmount Cemetery.
